Baby Blankets Buying Guide
Everyone remembers their baby blanket and many of us still have ours, well loved and well worn. Over the last 50 years, we have seen the progression from natural/organic to manmade synthetics and back to natural/organic again. How do you choose which baby blankets to buy for your precious newborn and your toddlers? Well, each has its own quality and some kids blankets have more benefits than others at a higher price. It always works best to get one better quality blanket that will service well at all times, and then a variety of other blankets and materials for specific uses.
Cashmere Baby Blankets
If you were to buy only one blanket that would bundle baby warmly and softly through her infant and toddler years until passed on as an heirloom, the best buy you could possibly make is a cashmere kids blanket. Though slightly higher in price, these blankets will go the distance and last whereas synthetics will not. Cashmere, when blended with cotton, provides a very lightweight blanket that is the softest and cuddliest blankie for your little one. The 90% cotton to 10% cashmere makes it machine washable so that it is even easy to care for.
Cashmere baby blankets are the softest, lightest weight, no scratchiness wool blankets available on the market today and they are completely natural, making them less prone to allergic reactions. They also allow babies precious little body to breathe, very important for the maximum health of baby. The chemistry of our bodies requires our skin cells to absorb beneficial and friendly chemicals and release excess and toxic ones. To do so, our skins need to breathe. Kids blankets and kids clothes made from cashmere also stay warm even when damp which is excellent for winter and rainy months.
Cotton Kids Blankets
Blankets made from 100% cotton are natural and do breath and are great in warm weather, but not as soft as a cashmere blend and definitely not as warm. They often come in nice big sizes though so that you can wrap baby up and bundle him well.Cotton is highly prone to shrinking and shows wear and tear, so make sure that you buy one that is preshrunk and machine washable.
Synthetic Baby Blankets
Synthetics can be very handy, especially while travelling, and for quick wrap and runs. Some of the more popular versions like those designed by Two Twins have 100% cotton on one side and plush "chic mink" designer synthetic on the back to accommodate the presence of natural fabrics, are easy to wash, and come in a wide variety of bright and cheerful patterns. These types of kids blankets can be great for placing on the floor or in the car for a soft and comfortable base while wrapping baby in a cashmere blanket.
Fleece is a very popular fabric for kids blankets. They feel soft, warm, and plush, and you can just throw them in the machine, however they do tend to hold allergens and definitely do not breathe. For the longest wear and healthiest baby, cashmere baby blankets are the best.
